International Contract Bridge Match (sort of)
The latest in a series of Contract Bridge ‘International Matches’ involving 32 bridge players in the area took place at the Playa Grande Hotel, Puerto de Mazarrón on Monday 13th February.
Some would say only the finest local players from Camposol Bridge Club (CBC) and Mazarrón Bay Bridge Club (MBBC) were selected to play; others would say the teams were made up of whoever was around at the time. What is not disputed is that last year’s winners (England) this time faced a much stronger European Team.
Due to reasons too complicated (& boring) to explain, this year’s match was billed as ‘GB+1’ versus ‘Rest of Europe+1’. At stake was the Jean Boone Cup (named in honour of a local bridge legend who unfortunately was unable to participate in this year’s competition) and of course the bragging rights until the next encounter.
Contrary to everyone’s expectations, the first of 3 sessions went badly for Team Europe+1, with GB+1 taking a substantial lead.
Things again started badly for Europe in the second session, which no amount of caffeine or bravado could reverse.
Heading into the third session, Team GB+1 were well ahead, but the seemingly inevitable outcome they hoped for never happened. A huge effort by the European Team managed to overturn GB’s lead and in the end Rest of Europe+1 won by 214 imps to 186 (fortunately there were a couple of experts on hand who understood what ‘imps’ were).
However, all is not lost as this match is being played over 2 legs, the second was at the Trevi Bar & Restaurant, Camposol B on 22nd February. The eventual winners were the team with the highest aggregate number of imps. Watch this space for the result and the next thrilling instalment.
If you are interested in playing bridge in a social yet challenging environment, google Camposol Bridge Club and/or Mazarrón Bay Bridge Club for further details. Bridge is played across the 2 clubs by several nationalities and differing experience levels on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.
