Altorreal, to the north of Murcia City, was the April venue for the Los Amigos Golf Society. The number of 31 members turning out for this event was a little below average, but had no bearing on what resulted in a good day’s golf for most of us. The format on this occasion was a Singles Stableford and was played on a course generally described as being in very good condition. The weather was kind to us for most of the day, but the wind gained in strength as the day wore on. It did not affect many players, but for those of us having a nightmare, any excuse will suffice! There were some patches of turf that had seen better days but insufficient to be of any real consequence.
There were some surprises both during and after the game. One surprise was how well a 28 handicapper played with his new clubs and another was the high prices encountered when paying for drinks!
Our Captain, Les Dryden, presented the prizes as follows:
Winner with 33 points – Gerry McRobert
Winner with 26 points – Keith Collins. (On countback from Gordon Neilson).
Winner with 29 points – Dave Bullimore
Nearest the Pin Winners:
Hole 5: at 10.22 metres – Dave Bullimore (those new clubs again!)
Hole 8: at 6.96 metres – John Dawson
Hole 10: at 5.6 metres – Glenn Read
Hole 17: at 2.56 metres – Terry Pegg
Our Presentation was held as usual in the Camposol Club de Golf with very good attendance from members and their wives & partners. However, on this occasion, our two ‘Raffle Kings’, Fred Harvey and Keith Collins, helped greatly by their wives; Brenda and Jean respectively, having done absolutely sterling work for the Society over the last two and a half years, have decided to call it a day. The Captain paid tribute to them for their efforts for which they received a great round of applause.
