Forty LAGS members and guests competed in the November Competition at Las Saurines de la Torre Golf Resort.
According to our very own diarist Samuel ‘Mr Whippy’ Peeps, LAGS have in fact played here before; in 2012 apparently, although no-one else could remember it. In those days the facilities were sparse to say the least. All that was available was a hut to change in, a vending machine for a coffee and no shade! Even now there are still few directional signs for the golf complex, but all players managed to arrive on time; that is with the exception of the most important man, the Treasurer!
How different things are today; A fully operational Jack Nicklaus designed golf course with undulating fairways and greens, both beautifully manicured; a fully operational club house complete with well stocked Pro Shop and for good measure a supermarket right next door. The greens were super slick; the 18th resembling a perfectly grassed skate board park! Two puts on here was considered exceptional.
The clocks had just ‘gone back’, so an 11.27am first tee time meant that some rounds would not be complete until dusk at the earliest. Our captain led by example dressing in line with the old adage ‘wear something light at night’. He wore a white shirt, white trousers and a white hat and looked more like a cricketer than a golfer. He could however be spotted from everywhere on the course which, given it was his last competition as Captain, we will forgive him for! Conditions were blustery and the temperatures considerably lower than in recent days, weeks and months! Most other members dressed appropriately.
The competition was again a closely fought Stableford and an enjoyable day on a quality course was had by all members.
