Monday 5th March and 36 members and guests of Los Amigos Golf Society were off to Hacienda del Alamo for their March competition. The day started off a little chilly and quite windy, but eventually warmed to an agreeable temperature. The wind stayed with us for most of the day and, sometimes, became a great help in achieving some long drives: conversely, it was an occasional hindrance.
The format for the day was a Waltz 1, 2, 3 so; having teams of four was perfect. Teeing off on the first fairway with a following wind helped us get into the swing of things. Unfortunately, the day ended prematurely for two teams as the heavens opened and an absolute deluge of rain stopped play.
Two stories come to mind: one of hard luck; one of good fortune. Teeing off from the 18th Tee, Glenn Read made his usual long drive, followed by an excellent second shot with the ball landing on the green. Physics then played its part because, after landing, the ball rolled into the lake!
As usual, all Par 3’s were designated Nearest the Pin competitions and one particular member managed to get very close to the perfect result, but, Neil Macfarlane, that well known Scotsman and psychic, introduced an element of mental telepathy. He could only stand and watch as his tee shot landed on the green and rolled towards the hole. However, Neil’s mental powers took control and he successfully managed to stop the ball 6mm from the hole! With a potentially big bar bill in mind, failure was not an option.
Captain Les Dryden, presented the prizes:
Winning Team with 80 points: Gerry McRobert, Dave Pugh, John Girvan and Nick Jones.
Nearest the Pin:
Hole 5: at 6mm Neil Macfarlane
Hole 8: at 7.2mts Tony Pickworth
Hole 12: at 5mts Gerry McRobert
Hole 15: at 5mts Richard Moss
Another successful Presentation Evening was held in the Restaurant of the Camposol Club de Golf.
