The 2017-18 regular season ended in controversy and disappointment for Mazarrón FC, although a place in the end of season play-offs was achieved.
The last two games of the season were at home to second placed Club Olimpico de Totana and away to the newly crowned league champions CAP Ciudad de Murcia. If Mazarrón had won both of these games they would have been promoted automatically to the Tercera Division for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Unfortunately the home game against Totana was one of the most controversial in recent years. Totana took the lead in the first minute, but Mazarrón were getting back into the game when, after just 20 minutes, the influential midfielder Boudia was sent off for a second bookable offence. He was shown his first yellow card after just five minutes when he protested about a dangerous tackle on Mazarrón’s centre forward Blas Bazan which went unpunished. Worse was to follow when he won a mid-air challenge with a Totana player in front of the main stand and was astonishingly shown a second yellow card. Players, coaching staff and spectators all showed their anger at this decision and the upshot was that Mazarrón were reduced to nine players when Nacho was shown a red card and both Manager Juanlu and Coach Juan Andreo were also sent from the touchline by a referee whose proud record this season was to show 11 red cards and 125 yellow cards in the 16 games he had officiated.
The fun didn’t end there, however, as following incidents in the dressing room area at half time, the referee refused to start the second half until there was a police presence at the ground which took around 30 minutes!! Although Mazarrón fought hard throughout the rest of the game, the two man deficit proved too much and despite a superb free kick from Jose Da they went down 3-1 in a battling performance which earned the whole team the Man of the Match award from the Los Amigos members. The final game of the regular season also ended in defeat, this time by the only game of the game at CAP Ciudad de Murcia.
Since dispensing with the services of former Manager Paco Pliego in early March, Mazarrón won only four of their last nine league games and they finished the season in fourth position, the same as last year but with one fewer point.
The semi final against fifth placed Nuestro Abaran was held over two legs on 20th & 27th May, but at the time of going to press the results are not known. If Mazarrón are successful they will contest the Play Off Final against either 3rd placed CD Algar or 6th placed CD Plus Ultra again over two legs on the weekends of 2nd/3rd June and 9th/10th June. If both teams win one game each, the team with the best aggregate score goes through. If aggregate scores are level at the end of both games, the team which has scored most goals away wins. If, after taking away goals into consideration, the scores are still level extra time of 15 minutes each way is played.
Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC organise a supporters’ coach to most away games at €10 for members and €12 for non-members. If Mazarrón are successful in the Play-Off Semi-Final against Nuestro Abaran, full details of the dates and kick off times for the Final Tie will advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on Facebook fb.me/mazarron2016 and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarrón.
