With a third of the season gone, Mazarrón were 4th in the Tercera Divison and in a play-off position. This is quite remarkable considering this is the first season back at the higher level. Support at home and away games continue to increase and the future looks fairly bright.
However, disciplinary problems both on and off the field have not helped the cause. Mazarrón has one of the worst records for bookings and yellow cards, and crowd problems at the home games against Cieza and UCAM Murcia led to fines of €1,500 and €2,000 respectively and the Estadio Municipal was closed by the Murcia Federation for one game. The Cieza game was extraordinary in that the visiting team left the field with fifteen minutes still remaining after Mazarrón had scored an equaliser to make the score 1-1. The referee had no choice but to abandon the game as they refused to return to the field. The Murcia Federation awarded the game to Mazarrón by a 3-0 margin and also deducted three points from Cieza which saw them drop to the foot of the table.
The ground closure following the UCAM match resulted in the ‘home’ game against UD Los Garres being played at the Estadio Mundial 82 in Lorca. Fortunately, this did not affect the result as Mazarrón ran out 2-0 winners with Basi getting both goals. Five players were suspended for this game, Jose Da, Nacho and Zurdo who had one game bans and Dani Barrelis and Chicho who received five and four match bans respectively for insulting the referee after the UCAM game, even though neither was in the squad that day. Both Barrellis, Mazarrón’s leading scorer and Chicho have now left the Club. A new signing, to replace Barrelis, is Habib, a striker who made his debut as a substitute in the 1-0 away defeat to CAP Ciudad de Murcia in mid November. It is hoped that he will settle in quickly and link up well with Basi up front. In the same game, midfielder Andreo was sent off for receiving two yellow cards and now faces his third suspension of the season after collecting ten yellow cards and one red card in his twelve appearances do far!!
Although the team is in 4th position, there is little to choose between the teams in 4th and 10th position, with only one point separating them.
Mazarrón’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC organise a supporters’ coach to most away games. Tickets can be booked at the weekly Los Amigos meetings at €10 for members and €12 for non-members. For longer journeys a stop is often made en-route for refreshments. Full details of all games, dates and kick off times are advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on fb.me/mazarron2016 and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarrón.
