Formula 1 2018 Season Review

Next year there will be 3 rookies on the grid: Lando Norris (McLaren), Alexander Albon (Toro Rosso) & George Russell in a Williams as well as 3 returnees, Daniil Kvyat back in a Toro Rosso (for the third time), Robert Kubica (Williams) & Antonio Giovinazzi (Sauber).

With six new faces on the grid who is leaving? Van will contest in Formula E, Eri is going to IndyCar, Oco will be the test/reserve driver for Mercedes & Alo, leaves after 18 years in F1. He will be sorely missed as he is a great character and a born fighter. He will be taking a sabbatical in an attempt to fulfil his dream and claim the magical ‘Triple Crown’ by winning the Indy 500 along with the Monaco GP and Le Mans 24 hour race.

Albon, although born in London, will race under the Thai flag as his Mother is a native of Thailand.  He will be the first Thai driver in F1 since Prince Bira who contested 19 races way back during 1950-54.

Ham and Mercedes collected their respective Championship Trophies at the prize giving gala at the Grand Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia on 7th December. Vet & Räi also collected trophies for their respective 2nd and 3rd places. Lec was also awarded ‘Rookie of the Year’ for the second year in succession as he collected the same award last year for winning the Formula 2 championship in his rookie year.

Ham, from the 1,264 laps available during the 21 races completed 1,255 (99.29%) ahead of Vet with 1,249 (98.81%) & Van 1,203 laps (95.17%).

There were 524 pit stops made in the 21 races with Van & Str doing the most at 32 each. Van gained the most places during the year with 61 (maybe because he very often started at the back of the grid!). Gro was bottom of the list after losing 55 places over the 21 races. The best pit stop times over the season; Ferrari – 7, Red Bull – 5, Williams – 4, Sauber – 3, Mercedes 2.

Bot recorded the fastest laps during the season with 7 and was given the DHL Fastest Lap award.

China was the only race of the season where all drivers (19) finished the race on the lead lap.

There were 82 retirements during the 21 race season (9 less than last year). Alo & Ric get the trophy for the most DNF’s as they had 8 each. Red Bull & Toro Rosso had the most team retirements with 12 each.
