5th Easter (Semana Santa) Competition

There were various prizes for those who entered the competition for decorating facades and balconies of Cartagena. These displays will be available to view until Sunday 11th April. There were prizes for the best displays. It is hoped that many people will have taken part in this competition, especially as there have been no Easter parades due to COVID restrictions.

Exhibition – Máiquez, The Dream And The Shadow @ The City Hall of Cartagena (until April 18th)

52 artists have participated in this exhibition, acknowledging the 52 years that Isidoro Máiquez lived and celebrating the bicentennial of his death. The exhibition is made up of 52 newly created works by artists from Cartagena, the Region of Murcia and neighbouring communities. In addition to plastic work, there is sculpture, photography, engraving, illustration and collage.

Exhibition – Belén Orta – Another Reality @ Museum of the Roman Theatre (until April 30th)

This is a virtual and holographic exhibition in the BON Holographic Contemporary Museum. There will be several augmented seeds made in alabaster and other flowers made with books, taken to virtual space by means of holograms.

Exhibition – Tierra Minra Y Cantaora by Artist Rosario Gijón @ Subjective Room ‘Nicomedes Gómez’ of the Palacio Consistoria 1 (until May 17th)

The young artist takes a tour of the landscape of the Sierra Minera, the experiences of the miners themselves and the International Festival of Cante de las Minas. The main objective has been to work with the land, use landscapes and capture wisdom and suffering and the risk involved in working in the mine, including the cause of deaths.

Concerts @ El Batel, Cartagena

Saturday 3rd April – Coruña Xoel López will present the songs from his latest work, ‘La espina de la flor en tu costado’. 7pm

Sunday 4th April – The Pupaclown Company presents Romeo and Juliet at 12pm. 

Stars Frog Romeo and Frog Juliet fall in love in the middle of a conflict of batrachians with interests in Charconia. 10€ or 4 tickets for the price of 3.

Saturday 10th April – Singer Sergio Dalma has rescheduled his tour ‘30… y tanto’ with two concerts to comply with the new regulations on capacity. The concert on February 6th was cancelled and tickets will be refunded.  The new times will be 7pm and 10pm. 

Friday 30th April‘Concert Champêtre’ (‘Country Concert’), written for harpsichord by Francis Poulenc, will be performed by the harpsichordist, organist and fortepianist Silvia Márquez. This is considered a neoclassical piece with clear allusions to the Baroque, when the harpsichord was a common instrument. The OSRM cycle will end with the ‘First Symphony’, by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, conducted by Virginia Martínez.

Sunday 9th May – The Year of Discovery – 6pm 3€

The film by the Murcian director  Luis López Carrasco, shot in Cartagena and starring actors from the region, it is undoubtedly the event of the year and could not be absent from the FICCMOTECA programming . The film has a long history of awards and recognitions in reference film festivals in various countries including France, Greece, South Korea, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. It has recently won the ‘Feroz’ award for Best Documentary, awarded by the Association of Cinematographic Informants. It has also received two Goya awards, for ‘Best Documentary Film’ and ‘Best Editing’.

Synopsis – Spain, 1992. The Barcelona Olympic Games, the Seville Expo and the commemoration of the fifth centenary of the discovery of America. The country proudly presents itself to the international community as a modern, developed and dynamic nation. Meanwhile, in Cartagena, the increasingly violent protests caused by the economic crisis culminated in the burning of the regional parliament.

A fun comedy that was taken to the cinema in Spain by Álex de la Iglesia, talking about how hyper-connected the people today and the lack of communication that exists with the people who are closest.

Saturday April 10th – Renowned comedian from Almeria, Pepe Céspedes will present his show ‘Menu of the Day’ accompanied by three other stand-ups; Rubén Serrano, David Domínguez and Kalderas from Murcia. 7pm 10€  

Saturday April 17th‘ElDesk’, a play written by David López Sandoval and directed by Germán Madrid. Antonia Castillo, Carme Piqueras and Ana Cano are the interpreters of a show in which three sisters meet after the death of their mother in the waiting room of a hospital. During the night some childhood memories assail them. This play was the winner of the ‘Premi Draps’ 2019 in social theatre. 7.30pm 12€ 

Sunday April 25th‘Cloud Cloud’ is a puppet show with humour and love, aimed at a family audience and especially young ones. 12pm (approx. 50mins) 7€ 

Saturday May 8th – Malaga actor  Miguel Ángel Martín will perform with his  Monologues Of The New Normality’. Miguel acquired great notoriety during the quarantine of last March on social networks, where he shared his reflections through videos in which he recorded himself from home, talking about various topics with a touch of humour that made him connect with his audience. 7.30pm 10€

Tickets from Apolo Theatre website or 2 hours before the show. Seats will not be assigned when purchased in advance. The day before the show, spectators will receive their assigned seats by email. 

Regional Film Library @ CAM Cartagena Culture Room 7pm

The works include ‘Sofía’, ‘For Sama’, ‘Senso’, ‘The Burden’, ‘I’m Not Afraid’, ‘We Were Not Born Refugees’, ‘Beauty And The Beast’, ‘The Tree, The Mayor And The Media Library’, ‘In The Gardens Of Murcia’ and ‘The Trip To Nowhere’, to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the filmmaker, novelist and playwright Fernando Fernán Gómez.

Until April 8th with free admission until full capacity is reached.

Online Chess (until 28th May)

‘Chessline Cartagena’; an online chess platform that under the slogan ‘Ajedrizate’ aims to serve as an educational tool after school hours and to stimulate participation of schools to set up a Municipal Chess League. The approximate cost is 15€.

The online chess platform ‘Chesslang’, will enable both monitors and students to make video calls with a shared chess board, as well as options for different types of tournaments, online training and many other activities.

There will be group classes of 8-10 with specialized platforms to teach chess, for one hour a week divided by levels, education and age.
